Braces

What are braces?

Braces are helpful orthodontic devices that straighten teeth and result in a healthy smile. They use brackets and wires to apply gentle pressure to the teeth, moving them into the correct position. Both kids and adults can benefit from these devices that improve bite function and the appearance of your smile.

Types of braces

Traditional metal braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces, and they are more comfortable today than ever before. Made of high-grade stainless steel, metal braces straighten your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. With metal braces, you have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colorful smile.

Clear (ceramic) braces

Clear braces are the same as traditional metal braces except they are made of a clear, ceramic material. They are a less noticeable alternative to traditional metal braces and provide patients with an equally effective treatment.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners are a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable acrylic trays that straighten your teeth like braces. Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment; plus, brushing and flossing are less of a hassle.

Self-ligating braces

Self-ligating braces are made from the same materials as traditional braces. However, self-ligating braces do not require the use of elastics, which means fewer appointments and less friction placed on the teeth.

Self-ligating braces come with traditional metal, ceramic, or clear brackets. They are the same size as metal braces, but use a specialized clip in place of elastics to help the archwire guide teeth into place. The clip helps reduce the amount of pressure placed on the tooth, and requires fewer adjustments because there are no elastics to replace.

Why get braces?

Dr. Groves understands that adults and children have different needs regarding orthodontic care. Here are some of the most common reasons we recommend our patients consider braces:

  • Malocclusions: Malocclusions — misaligned upper and lower teeth such as overbites and underbites — can cause various issues if not adjusted.
  • Protruding teeth: This situation can result in tooth and gum damage, pain while chewing and difficulty speaking and breathing. It may also increase the chances of dental trauma.
  • Crowding: When your child’s teeth group together, they may find it more challenging to brush and floss. This occurrence can lead to increased plaque, which may cause cavities and gum diseases such as gingivitis.
